On Friday, June 14, 2024, former State Rep. Ruth Briggs King will officially announce her candidacy for lieutenant governor. The announcement will be made at three locations across Delaware: at 10 AM in the Old Court House in New Castle County, at 12 PM on the steps of Legislative Hall in Dover, and at 2 PM in the Old Court House in Georgetown, DE.
Briggs King's decision to run comes just six months after resigning from the General Assembly due to moving out of her district. Her 14-year tenure in the Delaware House of Representatives, serving the Georgetown/Millsboro area, has earned her respect from both sides of the aisle. She views the lieutenant governorship as a way to reenter the political arena and continue her public service.
The opportunity to run for lieutenant governor was unexpected. Briggs King was nominated for the position at the Delaware Republican Party’s state convention, a moment she found humbling. She accepted the nomination, seeing it as a call to further her commitment to the state.
Briggs King will campaign alongside gubernatorial candidate and House Republican Leader Mike Ramone. She supports Ramone's focus on moving away from party politics to prioritize policy and quality. Her experience, especially her time on the Joint Finance Committee (JFC), has prepared her to address economic strength, education, and public safety in her campaign.
Currently, Briggs King is the only announced Republican candidate for lieutenant governor. Meanwhile, three Democratic candidates—State Rep. Sherry Dorsey Walker, State Sen. Kyle Evans Gay, and Delaware Democratic Party 2nd Vice Chair Debbie Harrington—are set to compete in the September primary election.
