A group of local seniors from Seaford recently took a meaningful trip to the heart of Delaware’s government, gaining a firsthand look at how the state operates while reinforcing the importance of civic engagement.

About a dozen-and-a-half members of the Nanticoke Senior Center traveled to Legislative Hall on Tuesday, April 14, for a guided visit hosted by State Representative Danny Short. The outing offered participants a unique opportunity to step inside the state capitol, learn more about the legislative process, and connect directly with elected officials.

During their visit, the group toured the historic building, observed the inner workings of government, and were formally recognized in the House Chamber. One of the highlights of the day included a meeting with the governor, giving attendees a rare chance to engage with state leadership in a personal and memorable way. The group also shared lunch together, adding a social element to the educational experience.

This visit continues a longstanding tradition for the Nanticoke Senior Center, which organizes annual trips to Dover to keep its members informed and involved in state affairs. Last year’s trip, however, was cut short due to a minor traffic accident on the way to the capitol. Fortunately, this year’s visit went off without a hitch. Rep. Danny Short noted that “the 2026 version of this went a lot smoother and was hopefully more enjoyable than what happened last April.”

In a time when attention spans are shorter than ever, and distractions are constant, it says a lot about our community that so many people still want to stay engaged and involved in what’s happening in Dover,” Short added.

The successful visit underscores the value of lifelong civic participation and highlights how local organizations like the Nanticoke Senior Center continue to foster connection, curiosity, and community involvement among their members.

As these seniors demonstrated, civic engagement is a commitment that can last a lifetime.
