The Delaware Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is warning residents to remain cautious after a new text message scam targeting Delawareans has surfaced.
According to officials, the scam involves fraudulent Short Message Service (SMS) texts claiming the recipient has an outstanding traffic violation. The messages instruct individuals to click on a link and pay an unspecified amount by a certain date to avoid penalties such as suspended vehicle registration, loss of driving privileges, legal action, or referral to a debt collector.
The DMV emphasizes that these messages are not legitimate and are designed to trick recipients into providing payment and sensitive personal or financial information. Residents are urged not to click on any links included in such messages. Residents are urged not to respond to these messages or click on any links included in them.
Anyone who receives a suspicious message is encouraged to report it to the Federal Trade Commission or the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) at ic3.gov. When filing a report, individuals should include the phone number the message came from and any website links included in the text.
Those who may have clicked on a suspicious link or shared sensitive information should take immediate steps to secure their personal and financial accounts and contact their financial institutions to dispute any unfamiliar charges.
For official information regarding a driver’s license or vehicle registration, residents should access their account through the state’s myDMV portal, call 302-744-2500, or email DMVCustomerService@delaware.gov
.
