Delaware’s Department of Transportation (DelDOT) has released its latest Quarterly Legislative Update, highlighting progress on several major transportation and infrastructure projects across Sussex County. These improvements aim to enhance safety, mobility, and long-term resilience for local communities. Here’s a breakdown of the most significant updates.
LOCAL PROJECTS
1. Replacement of Bridge 3-237 on Old Furnace Road over the Nanticoke River
Phase: DesignConstruction Completion: TBD
DelDOT continues to prioritize the replacement of Bridge 3-237 due to its deteriorating structural condition. The project also includes improvements at the nearby Old Furnace Road and Middleford Road intersection—though these elements have now been separated into two projects.
Key Updates:
A new FAQ document is available online to address questions from the June 2024 public outreach session.
In response to community concerns, a truck restriction was added to Dove Road in January 2025.
Additional truck restrictions on nearby roads were not recommended, as they were not warranted or would worsen traffic elsewhere.
Intersection improvements have been split from the bridge project to avoid delaying bridge work due to funding and public outreach needs.
The intersection project will be re-prioritized among other safety projects.
A community update is expected by early 2026.
2. Bridge Painting – Sussex County
Project: Repainting eight local bridgesLocal Bridges Included:
Poplar Street over Williams Pond Spillway (3-256)
Market Street over the Nanticoke River (3-151)Projected Completion: Spring 2026
