Community, Patriotism, and a Powerful Show of Support: The 7th Annual Back the Blue Caravan Rolls Through Sussex County

The 7th Annual “Back the Blue” Caravan wrapped up this week, leaving behind a trail of appreciation, unity, and heartfelt gratitude across Sussex County. Organized by Drew Sunderlin—who was inspired by a 2018 article praising Ocean View Police Chief Ken McLaughlin—the caravan has become a grassroots tradition during National Police Week, recognizing the dedication and sacrifice of law enforcement officers across Delaware.

🚓 Route 13 Recap: A Day of Patriotism and Recognition

On Thursday, May 15, the final day of the three-day event, the caravan made its way up Route 13, stopping to honor departments in Delmar, Laurel, Seaford, Blades, Bridgeville,

Greenwood, and Delaware State Police Troop 5. Each department was greeted with cheers, sealed snack donations, and dozens of handwritten thank-you notes—simple gestures with deep meaning.

Local police officers were visibly moved. “Getting to meet every one of them today and shake hands and getting that support and the ‘thank yous’ really hits home and it means a lot,” said Greenwood Police Chief David Walton in an interview with WBOC.

📺 The 39th District Hits the Airwaves

Among the standout participants in Thursday’s Route 13 caravan were Shep and Barb from the 39th District Republicans, proudly decked out in their “We Support Our Police” t-shirts. Their dedication and enthusiasm did not go unnoticed—they were featured in the WBOC news coverage, representing not just the 39th, but all Delawareans who continue to stand behind our officers.

🎉 Decorated Cars and “Best in Show” Spirit

Each of the 12 participating vehicles was uniquely decorated with Back the Blue flags, signs, and patriotic flair. Officers at each stop were invited to vote on their favorite designs, with daily “Best in Show” awards handed out for the most creative and heartfelt displays of support.

🚗 A County-Wide Effort

The caravan spanned three routes over three days:

  • May 13 (Rt. 1) – Honoring police in Fenwick Island, Ocean View, Dewey Beach, Rehoboth Beach, Lewes, and Milton

  • May 14 (Rt. 113) – Stops in Selbyville, Frankford, Millsboro, Georgetown, and more

  • May 15 (Rt. 13) – Final day visiting Delmar to Greenwood and Troop 5

Every stop served as a reminder that small towns can make a big impact, especially when united in a common cause.

🙏 Why It Matters

This annual caravan is more than a symbolic gesture—it’s a statement. A message that our law enforcement is not forgotten, that they are seen, valued, and appreciated. It aligns with the original intent of National Police Week, established by President Kennedy in 1962, to honor those who serve and those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

The 39th District Republicans are proud to be part of this growing tradition and thank everyone who participated or cheered from the sidelines.

If you participated, we’d love to see your snapshots and hear your stories!

Let’s continue to Back the Blue—365 days a year.

Together, we make Sussex County stronger.
