More than 60 residents joined State Rep. Danny Short at his monthly Coffee with Danny gathering last Wednesday at the Nanticoke Senior Center. The event, held on the first Wednesday of every month, continues to be a meaningful forum for open dialogue, local updates, and direct communication with constituents. Here are the key highlights from this month’s discussion:
Automobile Insurance Reform Task Force Update
Rep. Short shared insights from his work on the Automobile Insurance Reform Task Force, created through Senate Concurrent Resolution 111. With rising insurance costs driven by advanced vehicle technology, increased healthcare expenses, and other economic pressures, the task force is seeking ways to ease the financial burden on Delaware drivers.
As an insurance professional, Rep. Short emphasized a particularly troubling statistic: Delaware ranks third-worst in the nation for teen driver accidents. He suggested that enhanced driver education and training could be part of the solution. The task force has no formal reporting deadline, meaning its work will continue into the upcoming year.
Traffic Light Decision at Sussex Montessori School
Transportation officials have determined that the state will not install a traffic light at the Sussex Montessori School entrance on Stein Highway. The decision comes despite concerns about heavy school traffic during peak hours and the ongoing issue of speeding motorists on the busy roadway. Community members continue to express worries about student and driver safety in the area.
Extraordinary Session Called by the Governor
Rep. Short also discussed the Governor’s decision to call an Extraordinary Session of the General Assembly for this Thursday. The central issue: a contested bill aimed at reversing certain tax benefits provided to businesses and farmers under the federal One Big Beautiful Bill Act.
The administration argues that keeping these deductions—particularly for research expenses and major equipment purchases—could reduce state revenue by over $400 million across the current and next two fiscal years.
Rep. Short questioned the urgency of the session, noting the federal law passed more than four months ago. He also highlighted the 53% increase in Delaware’s General Fund spending between FY 2021 and FY 2025—a rise of over $2.4 billion—as a major contributor to the state’s financial strain.
Seaford Police Address Truck Traffic Concerns
Seaford Deputy Chief of Police Tyler Justice updated attendees on efforts to guide truck traffic toward approved routes within city limits. Alongside enforcement, SPD has created the Seaford Truck Route Business Guide, a tool designed to help businesses and drivers access mapping apps that properly display truck routes—information not typically shown in standard GPS apps.
