June 4 Recap: Road Work, State Spending & Property Reassessment
Over 60 people attended Rep. Short’s most recent coffee meeting on Wednesday, June 4, where a range of important topics were discussed.
Here's a quick recap of the key takeaways:
Middleford Road Bridge Replacement Moving Forward
Rep. Short announced that the Middleford Road Bridge (Bridge 3-237)—which spans the upper Nanticoke River—will be replaced due to its "fair to poor" condition. However, improvements to the nearby Old Furnace Road intersection are being postponed due to financial limitations.
Sussex County Property Reassessment Nearing Completion
The county's court-ordered reassessment of residential, agricultural, and commercial properties is wrapping up. This process recalibrates property values and adjusts tax rates accordingly. By law, county revenue increases are capped at 15%, and school districts are limited to a 10% gain. Use the property tax calculator and learn more here: https://sussexcountyde.gov/reassessment
State Budget and Spending Update
As a member of the Joint Finance Committee, Rep. Short shared insights into the upcoming FY 2026 state budget. While he voiced concern about increased spending, he supported several elements, including:
Elimination of hundreds of long-vacant state jobs
A new review protocol for determining the necessity of unfilled positions
Funding for a pilot program aimed at improving classroom discipline, responding to teacher and parent concerns about disruptive learning environments
